Who is State Matters?

We are an eclectic group of artists, designers, developers, policy wonks and writers.

We founded State Matters in 2017 to make Illinois government clear and unintimidating. We believe that civic knowledge is the bedrock of a thriving democracy. As a nonpartisan educational organization, our agenda is to engage, educate, and inspire — regardless of who you are or where you’re coming from.

At first, we were just looking for some basic answers about how the state worked (or didn’t work). But our state government is dense with bureaucracy and the existing online resources were either too biased, too superficial, or flew right over our heads. When we couldn’t find what we were looking for, we built it ourselves.

Vision

We don’t want to just make government easy to understand. We also want to make it fun, beautiful, and enjoyable. Because that’s what we like. By focusing on striking and imaginative content, we appeal to people who want to be civically-engaged but might not have the time and energy to engage with in-depth journalism or unravel complicated legislative lingo.

Maaria Mozaffar

As a civil rights attorney, mediator and legislative consultant, I see firsthand the power of laws. My mission is to show people how to take control of their lives through the legal and legislative process that our society is built on. Laws undeniably reflect the moral code of a community. I don’t just want to talk about unjust laws, I want to help others understand the process of developing and writing legislation that creates long-term solutions. The most vulnerable individuals in our communities deserve advocacy, and it is by their success that we should be judged. However, before we can tackle the task of empowering others, we must be sure of the person we are. Movements of any kind can go dangerously off course if individuals aren’t sure of their convictions and what they’re fighting for. It's with that in mind that I started The Skinless Project, which provides role models of empowerment, and More Than Pretty, a book that serves as a guide to finding your purpose. All sales proceeds from the book is donated to The United State of Women.
